Ft. Myers and Lee County are situated along the Southwest Florida Coast on the Gulf of Mexico, between Port Charlotte and Naples. Lee County is home to several incorporated cities including Ft. Myers, Cape Coral, Bonita Springs, Ft. Myers Beach, and the City of Sanibel. Each city has its own atmosphere, attractions, and activities making each a worthwhile place to visit or live. Lee County’s population as of the 2000 census was 440,880. Projected population by 2007 was 615,728. Lee County is the most populous county in Southwest Florida. The median age is 45.2 years and the median household income is $40,319. The average temperature is 91 degrees in the summer and 73 degrees in the winter. Lee County public schools are administered by the School District of Lee County. There are 47 elementary schools, 21 middle schools, 13 high schools, 13 special education centers, and 14 charter schools within the Lee County public school system. In addition to public schools Lee County is home to many fine private and parochial schools. Florida’s newest public university is also located in Lee County. Florida Gulf Coast University is home to nearly 10,000 students. FGCU offers 37 undergraduate and 20 graduate programs in their five colleges. Lee County is also home to Edison Community College’s Lee County Campus and the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall. Edison offers a variety of classes and flexible scheduling to meet your needs. In addition to FGCU and ECC, Lee County also is home to Hodges University and satellite campuses from Nova Southeastern and Barry University. Just to the south of Lee County lies Collier County, home to Ave Maria University. Ave Maria is the first new catholic university founded in the US in over 40 years. Along with the university the town of Ave Maria is being developed. The town is believed to be the first town ever developed in conjunction with a university.
